How to Recover From A Broken Heart: Business School Rejection Letters

How to Recover From a Broken Heart
Business School Rejection Letters

This is the moment I had been waiting for. I would finally have access to the decisions from the various business schools who had captured my heart. It was my destiny to attend a highly selective school that attracted the best and the brightest. I couldn’t wait to tell Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter that my dreams had come true and I was going to marry the school of my dreams. Who doesn't love a romantic love story?  I do! It gives hope and provides inspiration to others who aspire to be swept off of their feet by their dreams.  I could smell, taste, and feel the happiness associated with opening multiple acceptance letters to my top choice schools. I committed my heart to the process and went above and beyond to ensure that I was perfect for the school of my choice.  It was evident that I wanted them and now I would find out if they wanted me too. I knew that these three actions would guarantee my success:

1) Extravagant Essays. Extravagant as in I put my heart and soul into these essays. These are not essays I wrote hours before the application deadline. It took me over 4 months to write, review, and refine my essays. Beauty takes time, right? My MLT and Forte coaches did an excellent job of helping me to turn my professional, emotionally detached essays into a master piece that any prince charming would be willing to read. They made me dig deeper with every word I wrote. The best of me was highlighted on paper and I felt like a million bucks when I hit the application submit button.
2) GMAT Jealousy. I had to learn the hard way. The GMAT is a jealous exam. It doesn't like you to put other events and commitments before it. So I had to sacrifice time with the love of my life in order to study for the GMAT. My beautiful love, Toastmasters, was kicked to the curb for the GMAT. Now anyone who knows me should know that I am a Toast-a-holic! I breathe, dream, and eat the Toastmasters educational program. It was a tough decision but I knew it was only temporary.
3) Beyond Blind Dates. I don't believe in blind dates when you are making a $100K investment. I like to know what I'm getting into. We all know that people can sound one way on paper but you get the real deal when you meet them in person.  So I visited EVERY top school on my list. I just knew a business school visit would seal the deal. My business school romance would meet me in person and instantly fall in love. Plus he would be flattered by all the attention I gave him and how much I already knew about him. Oh yes - a business school date would be like falling in love at first site.

Business school success was written all over my diary. Not only did I visualize myself getting into my top choice business school, but I could also hear the voice of an admission officer telling me that I would receive a scholarship and prestigious leadership fellowship. I would then take a break from corporate America and live a 2- year happy life with my MBA dreams. I had it all figured out.

Until…

I opened my business school letters and saw the word “WAITLIST”. Waitlist? Waitlist. Waitlist! Then the letters became mind boggling. "We are sorry to inform you". This could not be happening. My heart collapsed. My heart was melting. My heart was broken.

My utopian image of what life could be like was rudely interrupted by business school rejection letters. What do I do now?

If you are human and have ever allowed yourself to fall in love, you may have encountered the feelings associated with finding out that someone doesn’t love you as much as you love them.  YIKES! How do you overcome that? It feels like your entire world has shattered and you can’t think about anything else. You just can’t stop the tears.  Cry no more! It’s time to dry those tears and prepare for the best years ahead! Here are some words of wisdom for recovering from a broken heart.

·      If at first you don’t succeed try again.  How important is it to you? Are you going to give up on the first try or do you think you have a good chance of hitting a home run on your next try? Is it worth a second effort?  The opportunity may have been perfect but it may not have been the perfect TIME for you. Timing is everything. Maybe there is another level of growth that you need to experience before you settle down. If you truly feel deep down inside that you have met your soul mate and this connection was meant to be, don’t give up on your love. Try again!

·      Don’t get bitter, get better! It’s normal to feel sour after experiencing rejection.  Instead of thinking you were being rejected, realize that you are being redirected towards something better. Or maybe you just need to get better. I refuse to say how many times I felt rejected by the GMAT. My GMAT score denied me the chance of marrying the school of my dreams. In fact, my dream school didn’t even look my way. I was devastated. After spending a few hours of seeking comfort from oreos and chocolate brownies, I decided that I would use this perceived setback as an opportunity to step my game up and make a remarkable come back. So I strengthened other parts of my application and changed my GMAT study approach.  Sometimes you just have to change your mentality in order to transform your reality.

·      In order to get what you never had, you have to be wiling to do what you have never done. You may have heard this saying before, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result." Evaluate what you have done so far. What has worked in your favor? What can be done differently in order to make a quantum leap in your results? Take a step back and evaluate your progress so that you can fine tune your strategy. Commit to trying something new! It’s time to get what you want!

·      The greater the risk, the greater the rewards.  You may not see it now. You may not even want to think about it. But there is a reason that the risk is so immense. The rewards are colossal! Yes – the magnitude of your risk is preparing you for a million dollar reward. So don’t beat yourself up. You were willing to play the game. Most people never allow themselves to fall deep in love and put their heart into something where there is a risk of failure. Give yourself some credit! You are in pain because you are stepping outside of your comfort zone and doing something that most people wouldn’t dare do. You may feel rejection but you should never feel regret. At least you were not like the majority of the population who allowed the doubt in their mind keep them from the best years ahead.

·      Turn your test into a testimony.   The best way to get over your own pain is to help others heal from the pain that you just encountered. Encourage others through your courageous efforts! The struggle did not come to defeat you! Your character is being defined and strengthened. A person with a winner's mentality will never fail any test.

·      Don’t focus on the problems. Focus on the possibilities.  You received your test scores and realized that you bombed the exam. Now is not the time to beat yourself up. The test is over and done. There is nothing you can do to change what happened 5 minutes or 5 hours ago but you do have absolute control over what you do now and how you use this experience to propel your future. How can you use this problem to create more possibilities? Business school is all about solving problems. If you can strategically solve your problems and determine your competitive advantage in any situation, you will nail the business school curriculum and life!

·      Your network is your networth. Avoid lengthy interactions with people who make you feel like a complete failure. Surround yourself with people who are going to make you feel like a million bucks when you feel like a penny. You need people in your corner who are going to cheer you on to the next level of greatness. They may give you tough love but it's important to have people who support your constant growth and development.

·      Diminish hurt with humor.  There is nothing funny about pain but you can reduce the intensity of every situation with humor. When you look back, you should be able to laugh at your experiences. The GMAT broke my heart. I mean that exam ripped me a part and forced me to prove my love. I’m still trying to fight for the top spot! But I'm determined to show the GMAT who the boss really is. I am taking control and will wear the pants in this relationship. Stay tuned!

Nobody ever wants to suffer from a broken heart. It hurts. But you must think about the person you have grown to become through the process. You are not the same person. Good or bad, you learned something new from the experience and can use this to create an even brighter future. Never let the fear of rejection keep you from applying to the school of your dreams. If you learn how to turn your heart break into a heart throbbing motivational story for others, there is nothing that will keep you from marrying your dreams!

Keep Creating Endless Opportunities,

Ms. Corporate America

P.S. Don't be alarmed by this post. I was accepted to some exceptional schools (Ivy League) that I look forward to exploring further. Without the support from my MLT family, I know that the victories I experienced through this process would not have been possible. I am forever grateful to my MLT Coach, Wendy Dukes, for constantly pushing me and bringing out the best in me. For more information about MLT, visit www.ml4t.org.

Increase your VALUE by being the BEST you!

When it rains, it pours. We begin to question our ability to make it through the storm. Don’t you know that your test was a gift that you can give to others in the form of a testimony? Your mess is a message that can inspire others to GROW through what they are GOING through.  Where you have been can help someone else get to where they are going. No matter if you felt defeated in the past, doubted your capabilities, or felt insecure in your own skin, you can still rise and be great because YOU ARE VALUABLE!

That was my message to 7th and 8th girls at the Metro Achievement Center on Tuesday, July 21st.  I assumed I was going to speak to a small group of 20 students but I was greeted by over 90 incredible girls who are and WILL continue to make a difference in this world. What an amazing sight to see! I can’t thank Past Toastmasters District Governor and fellow CPA, Joan Moore, enough for recommending me for such a great opportunity. An opportunity that would force me to follow my own advice IMMEDIATELY.

I was invited to deliver an empowering message about moving from Fear to Confidence by recognizing your VALUE.  I spoke to students about my ability to complete over 100 scholarship applications in order to finance my undergraduate education, become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA), and be persistent in my pageant journey in order to win the title of Ms. Corporate America. I focused on my ability to turn these obstacles into opportunities by recognizing my value. As I reflected on my past experiences, my energy was redirected to my current situation. I started to think about my career and relationships that I was trying to run back to for comfort. Why? Why would I go back to situations that God has freed me from? Just because I know what to expect out of those situations doesn't mean those situations meet the expectations for my life. Just because the alternative path is filled with a mountain of ambiguity does not mean I should not try to climb it. But why Is it more appealing to be comfortable than to be happy? If you were given a vision of a greater future, why would you be willing to settle for less? Are we complacent with being undervalued? Why do we remain in situations that do not ADD value. Kings and Queens, it's time to increase your net worth!

If you were designed to be a $50 bill, you should not diminish your value by acting like a $1 bill. A $1 bill can only operate within their self - imposed limitations but you were given so much more. You have to understand what you are capable of! You were born to do great things. You were born to give something unique to the world. You were born with a powerful purpose that only YOU can pursue. Don't let your tainted mentality keep you from a beautiful reality!

If it's in your heart to be an employer, don't allow years to pass you by serving the role of an employee. If you were given the gift of speaking, don't limit your voice to the speaking opportunities you were presented with. Create your own opportunities! If you are seeking a more purposeful life, develop powerful relationships that will propel you forward. If you are aiming to go to business school, don't let the financial concerns cloud your vision. It may be easier to go back to the path that everyone walks but will you be happier? When you truly understand your value, you don't focus on the obstacles. The obstacle is a disguised opportunity that can propel you to arenas that will ADD more value. Transform your mentality and you will change your reality. You can not expect a million dollar bank account with a five dollar mentality. Upgrade your value by facing your FEARS. Don't run from the unexpected. Rise up to the new blessings that are heading your way. You have to wake up and realize that YOU ARE VALUABLE. Stop settling for LESS when you can have the BEST.

Even when you feel like you are at your lowest, you must still be willing to rise to your best. Each young lady in the room raised their hand and stated that at one point in their life, they felt defeated, insecure, lost, doubtful, and poor. None of this matters. Just like a $50 bill that has been stepped on, crumbled, and misused, you still have value. Rise up! When you understand your worth, no one or nothing can stop you from redeeming your rewards. When you understand your worth, you empower others to understand their worth. YOU ARE VALUABLE!

The best way to increase your value is to be a valuable contributor to the development of others. The best way to enhance your value is to be the best YOU because nobody can do it better than YOU!

Journey to Business School: MLT said YES!

4 years I perused the website.
3 years I spoke about the program.
2 Years I tried to complete the application.
This year I decided to take action!

I knew it and I made sure the world knew it too. I wanted an MBA from a top Ivy League institution and I was going to do whatever it took to get it. Well, I was going to take action as soon as I could connect all the dots in my mind. Now many of you know how long it can take for us to connect the dots in our mind when we are consumed with "what-ifs" and "hows". It can take years or decades to start moving. Sometimes we never move. We realize we may not be able to do it alone. What you may not realize is that YOU DO NOT HAVE TO DO IT ALONE.

Have you heard about Management Leaders for Tomorrow (MLT)? If you haven’t, you will now!  Trust me, your interest will increase and you will be captivated by the transformative curriculum, networking, and business confidence that MLT provides. I have more great news for you. The MLT MBA Prep 2017 Application is Open!

95% of MBA Prep Fellows attend a Top 25 Business School.

MLTers Visit the University of Michigan for UpClose Weekend

MLT Founder, John Rice, announced the opening of the 12th application cycle for MLT’s MBA Prep Program two weeks ago. MLT's MBA Prep Program offers Black, Hispanic, and Native American young professionals disciplined, proven guidance for the rigorous business school application process  and time - tested strategies for maximizing the business school experience and accelerating your post - MBA career. MLT was started to change the trajectory of young people in this nation. As a student at Harvard Business School, John recalls sitting in class wondering why there weren’t more people of color on paths similar to his. So he created MLT. Now, he has the opportunity to witness how MLT’s winning career playbook combined with superior coaching ultimately leads to opportunities for thousands of underrepresented minorities to gain access into America’s top business schools and corporations.

MLT Founder, John Rice, delivering the welcome address at Duke University in March 2014

In September 2013, I started the application with a fierce determination to finish the application. I was required to submit essays, transcripts, letters of recommendations, and a video. This process was more intense than the business school application process! But I kept going. As I continued to read the application requirements, a four letter acronym left me shaking: GMAT! Noooooooo......was there any way that I could avoid interaction with the GMAT? Before the age of 26, I became a Certified Public Accountant, Certified Fraud Examiner, and Project Management Professional. Surely those intense hours of mental preparation counted for something and would allow me to bypass the GMAT requirements. No! There way no way around it. In order to apply to MLT, I had to provide sample GMAT test scores above a 500. Well that should be easy, right? I wish! My previous exam experiences did not prepare me for the GMAT. I could not use the same strategy in order to score high on this exam. So what was I going to do? Stop the application process once again? No way! So I enlisted a GMAT success team and worked my tail off. It was tough but I knew I was tougher. I had to keep telling myself, "I can do this!". Unfortunately one week before the exam, LIFE HAPPENED. I thought about canceling my exam. But if I didn't take the exam, I would be forced to allow one more year to go by without applying to MLT. There was no way I was going to allow that to be my destiny. I was going to take that exam. SO I took the exam. My eyes popped out of my head. The numbers on the screen had to be wrong. I felt like I received the lowest score in GMAT history. Talk about a confidence thief! This meant I would have 45 days to improve my score in order to be eligible for MLT. YIKES!

Three weeks after my horrific GMAT encounter, I received an email from an MLT interviewer stating that I had been selected for a phone interview. I remember the moment vividly. I was at work validating a securities line item for a regulatory schedule when I dropped everything and ran to the restroom. I started jumping up and down screaming like I had won a million dollars while simultaneously praying that no one was in the bathroom stalls witnessing my dramatic excitement. I emailed the interviewer within 3 minutes to provide her with my availability. Since none of the times worked, she asked "Are you available NOW?" I can be! I could not believe I was about to do an interview on the spot! Well, I wanted this opportunity for over three years so I should be able to articulate why I wanted to be a part of this program.

During the interview, the interviewer asked what was I willing to sacrifice in order to be successful in MLT’s rigorous program. I honestly replied, “EVERYTHING”. I know that statement is a bit extreme, okay VERY extreme, but I knew MLT was my ticket to creating a better life for my family and community. I’ve had my eyes set on MLT since 2010 when my NABA colleague recommended that I research the program. It was love at first sight. The moments between the interview and the acceptance letter were filled with a strong desire and hope. I even engaged my family members in the MLT process by reviewing the rules of the GMAT with them. Yes! It was that serious.

I will never forget the day that I received my MLT Welcome email. It was my birthday. As I was heading to my birthday celebration on Friday, February 7th, 2014, I started screaming with joy and jumping with the utmost excitement. I received a congratulatory welcome email that stated the following:

“Dear Charlene,

On behalf of the MLT staff, congratulations on your acceptance to MLT’s MBA Programs Class of 2015! Year after year, we receive far more applications than we have spaces available. In a highly competitive applicant pool, your professional and academic achievements stood out. We believe you will make an excellent addition to the talented class, and we predict great success for you in business school and beyond. “

The welcome email is not where the story ends. In order to be official, I had to submit a gmat score over 500 by February 28, 2014. It may be easy for the average Joe but not for me. It was going to take dedication and focus in order for me to make it happen. I had 3 weeks to make it happen or I would have to kiss my MLT dream good bye. So I studied day and night. I had to keep telling myself "You Can Do it!" and counting on my amazing co-worker, Ashley T., in order to keep me motivated.  I took a week long vacation in order to have more time to focus on the most challenging areas. My week long study vacation turned into a trip to UCLA for a Women's Leadership Conference. Really Charlene? That's what everyone was yelling in my ear. But I realized that I couldn't overcrowd my mind with GMAT facts because I would probably explode the day of the exam. So I attended the conference in order to clear my mind. I promised myself that I would take a practice exam while in LA. So I did. I broke another world record. My score was lower than my lowest scores. This could not be happening. Two days before show time and my GMAT competence was decreasing. I started to panic. I started to think about the exam. I started to think about how far I had come. I started to think about how bad I wanted this. I started to PRAY. I had studied as much as I could and there was nothing else I could do at this point. Much to my surprise, I took the actual exam and scored 150 points above my previous score. I scored higher than I had ever scored on any practice test. THANK YOU GOD! It was official. I was about to embark on a life changing journey with 250 other ambitious leaders as a member of the MLT MBA Prep Class of 2015.

Was the sacrifice worth it? It sure was! I would do it all over again. Receiving the MLT welcome email was an unforgettable birthday present that gave me clarity about my goals, strengths, and future potential. There is nothing like the feeling of connecting all the dots and gaining exposure to the options around you.  Due to the personalized coaching that I received, my focus became less about the income and more about the impact. I could do what I was naturally talented at and still be successful. What an eye opener! My coach, Wendy Dukes, helped me to discover my core strengths and values.  During our coaching calls, I was forced to relive my childhood days and explore what mattered most to me. I have always enjoyed taking individuals and organizations from where they are to where they want to go. Coach Wendy Dukes unleashed a career option that changed my vision for the future. She introduced me to the world of Human Capital! Due to those insights I went from California to Boston to Michigan to New York in order to explore my graduate options for human capital.  This was an experience that I will never forget. I will share more MLT highlights soon. But I am beyond grateful for my coach Wendy Dukes, MLT Alum, and my MLT cohort for helping me get one step closer to my dreams. Thank YOU!

The Vision (from the Desk of John Rice):
AS I look into the future, I see 1000 MLT senior leaders and a pipeline of 10,000 coming from behind them who are transforming our institutions, our communities, and our nation. We are seeking young people who are talented, ambitious, hardworking, and scrappy – people who have a sincere desire to change the world. MLT’s MBA Prep program is your next step journey toward senior business leadership.

More than 4,500 high potential minorities have benefited from MLT programs. Last year, 98% of MBA Prep Fellows entered a Top 25 Business School.
